……An Educational Tour…..

 


 

At the end of the last school vacation we went on an education tour to Colombo. This tour was organized by the science club of our school.

We went by a privet coach There were fifty students and five teachers for this tour. We left Kurunagala at about 6.00 a.m. We stopped at Nittambuwa to have our breakfast. After having our breakfast we proceeded to Colombo. We could reach Colombo by 10.00 a.m

        First we visited the Colombo harbor. It was a very busy place. There were many kinds of ships. Cargo ships, Tankers and ocean liners were some of them. According to an officer there, these ships come to the harbor for various needs. Some ships bring food and oil. Some ships come here to obtain fuel and water. We saw huge cranes lifting heavy loads of goods to load and unload the ships.

 


At about 1.00 p.m. we went to the Viharamahadevi park. We had our lunch there. After having our lunch we rested for some time.

At about 2.30 p.m. We went to the National Museum. It is located in a convenient spot. The museum is divided in to several sections.


        First we went to the section where ancient arms were exhibited. There were bows and arrows, spears, swords and old fashioned guns. A complete skeleton of an elephant was kept there. The huge skeleton of a whale was hung on the roof of the building. Then we went to another section where ancient ornaments and cloths worn by our ancestors. The throne of the last kandyan king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe was kept in a glass cage.



After that we went to the planetarium. It was a wonderful place. We were shown the pictures of all the planets with the help of a projector. There, we were able to gain some knowledge about the solar system.


At about 4.00 p.m. we went to Dehiwala. We visited the zoo. It is a large enclosure with trees, ponds, cages and various sorts of buildings in which live animal are kept for exhibition. There were birds, reptiles, tigers, lions, monkeys and baboons. The zoo was very attractive. We also saw the elephant dance.

 


At about 6.30 p.m. we started our return journey. We could reach Kurunegala at about 10.30 p.m. we will never forget this enjoyable tour.
